Creating Connections Between Culture, Community and Place
When Great Portland Estates (GPE) were looking to strengthen community engagement around The Hickman in Whitechapel, Art Acumen identified an opportunity to create meaningful social value through cultural partnership.
Rather than developing a standalone engagement programme, we brokered a collaboration between GPE and Whitechapel Gallery, connecting one of London's leading property companies with one of its most influential contemporary art institutions.
Recognising the potential to align GPE's community ambitions with Whitechapel Gallery's acclaimed Nocturnal Creatures festival, we developed a partnership that transformed The Hickman into a vibrant venue for contemporary art, performance, film and music, welcoming a diverse public audience and creating meaningful connections between culture, community and place
Identifying the Opportunity
Art Acumen recognised that Nocturnal Creatures offered a unique opportunity to open The Hickman to the local community in an authentic and engaging way.
Rather than creating a new initiative from scratch, we identified a partnership that could deliver genuine value for all stakeholders.
For GPE, it provided a meaningful way to contribute to the cultural life of Whitechapel. For Whitechapel Gallery, it created access to a distinctive new festival venue. For visitors, it offered the opportunity to experience contemporary culture within an unexpected setting.
The collaboration demonstrated how creativity and cultural partnerships can generate authentic social value, fostering participation, cultural access and a stronger sense of connection between people and place.
I actually think this reads more like a premium placemaking consultancy case study. It positions Art Acumen as the organisation that spots opportunities, connects partners and creates shared value, rather than simply delivering events. That's a much stronger reflection of what you did here.

The collaboration created value not only for GPE, but also for the gallery, visitors and the wider Whitechapel community.”
Why It Matters
Successful social value cannot always be delivered through standard programmes or tick-box initiatives. It often emerges through relationships, partnerships and opportunities that respond to the unique character of a place and the people who use it.
This project reflects Art Acumen's approach to placemaking and social value: identifying overlooked opportunities, bringing together complementary organisations and using culture as a catalyst for community connection.
By connecting GPE and Whitechapel Gallery, we helped create an experience that was not only culturally enriching but also genuinely rooted in the local community, demonstrating how creativity can help unlock lasting value for people, place and stakeholders alike.
Have a project, place or community challenge? We help uncover creative opportunities others might miss.
