Zoe Benbow
The ruptures, ripples and random movements that erupt in her painting process are held in check by a taut structuring of the surface.
This ‘frontality’ poses the possibility of a shift in space and structure. The viewing experience of her work completely immerses and expands awareness for the human sense of separateness from the environment. Benbow creates paintings conceived around geology of association and memory as actual place. Her works move freely between abstraction and reference, self-containment and randomness, geometry and gesture all while weaving together a complex aesthetic language which eventually crystalises in a resolved picture plane.
Benbow received an MA from the The Royal College of Art. She has held several artists residencies including Delfina Studios and research periods in Switzerland, Andalucia, Finland and South India. Her work is represented in many important public and private collections including Queen Mary University London, Manchester City Art Gallery, The British Council and The Royal Palace of Jordan.
Benbow lives and works in London and the Tarn Valley, France.
‘‘I delight in drama and densely folded knots in the landscape, ravines, rocks and cliffs and the consequent drawings are analytical and highly structured. Time is implied through the rhythm of the drawn line trailing the eye across the contours of the landscape.’’
