Steve Nederveen
My work focuses on the changeable relationship we have with nature. Loving and destroying in the same breath.
Steve Nederveen is a Canadian artist whose work focuses on the passage of time, a theme stemming from his own practice of meditation. Moments of peaceful clarity have compelled Nederveen to draw connections between the natural environment and conceptual notions of spirituality through his artistic process of combining painting and photography. By blurring the lines between photograph and painting, Nederveen develops a magical realism that inspires us to see the world with new eyes. By distressing and aging the work he creates the sense of past and present; of struggle and transformation. Nederveen seals each piece with a signature glass-like layer of resin coats, enhancing the clarity of the image and reflecting the viewer in the work.
Nederveen received a BA in Design from University of Alberta and studied Fine Art at Medicine Hat College. His work has been featured internationally in galleries, art fairs and private collections.
Nederveen lives and works in Toronto, Canada.
“I want people to feel the awe and wonder of nature. As a person that loves the water (surfer, kiteboarder and sailor), I have had many wonderful moments of feeling in tune with the waves. This flow state is an incredible feeling and I want to share just how alive and calm it is. There is such a wonderful feeling of alignment with the world, I really think it's worth sharing. Art has given me a way to express these experiences and dig deeper into the language that paint and photography have to offer.”
