Rebecca Mason
Mason’s artwork is a distinct and striking fusion of text and neon light that conveys the often somber facets of human existence and emotion. By harnessing the connotations associated with neon light, her sculptural works offer insightful commentary on life, love, money, and culture.
Her unique signature style incorporates typed text backgrounds that function as a canvas for neon or argon-filled glass words or phrases written in her distinctive handwriting. Each letter stands alone, separate from the others and never joined together in cursive. The text backgrounds present diverse interpretations and facets of the overarching theme, complementing the message conveyed by the illuminated words. Notably, Mason personally authors all the background text.
Mason’s artwork offers a thought-provoking commentary on society and human nature, ingeniously blending form and content to create a visual language that speaks directly to the viewer.

“My work is text based. Each piece is a combination of a neon word or phrase embodying a theme atop a background brimming with text that I’ve written. I spend a lot of time drawing out spider diagrams of concepts to capture, from our assumptions, fears, double standards and flaws (particularly my own), to our egos and the desire to be “right”. Money, power and control are central to many of the works. I try to play around with these and include some whimsy. In my 'Flaws' piece for example, I deliberately incorporated some errors.”
