In a world where you can get almost anything instantly, Lisa‑Marie Price chooses a process shaped by chance and patience.

Peter Blake

Lisa‑Marie Price creates abstract paintings using handmade watercolours crafted from foraged earth pigments, a practice that emerged from her shift toward sustainability and a deeper connection with the natural world. Her commitment to eco‑conscious making began when she realised her studio work no longer reflected her values; this led her to develop her own paints from rocks, minerals, and soils gathered during walks, travels, and community exchanges. Each pigment carries the memory of a specific place, giving her work a material intimacy rooted in landscape, geology, and lived experience.

Guided by close observation of nature, Price draws inspiration from the small, often overlooked moments that invite pause—wind moving through grass, shifting cloud formations, subtle changes in light. Her slow, meditative process of collecting, crushing, and preparing pigments shapes the rhythm of her paintings, which explore themes of climate, consciousness, and our relationship with the land. Working on off‑cut linen to minimise waste, she creates quiet, textured compositions that encourage viewers to slow down, breathe, and reconnect with the present moment.

Her practice has expanded through collaborations and site‑specific projects, where pigments sourced by families, communities, or builders become part of the work’s narrative. Each painting is meticulously documented, with the origins of every pigment recorded on the reverse, preserving the story of place and material.

Interview:

“My work isn’t just about the finished painting - it starts when I collect the rocks. From collecting them, to bringing them home, to crushing them by hand into a fine powder, to making the paint, and then painting. That slow build‑up of time before I paint allows me thinking time. I love the whole process and I love that it’s slow.

…I don’t know if I could paint just by buying a tube of paint in a shop anymore.”
