Neil Canning
Neil Canning’s visual language draws from decades of geographic immersion and cultural exploration, resulting in a sophisticated abstraction that balances structural clarity with expressive depth.
Neil Canning is a British painter known for his use of intense colour and dynamic forms in his paintings. His works captures dramatic moments in nature through mixed media works on paper and larger oils on canvas. Printmaking and more recently sculpture add to the wide range of techniques he employs. Pure light and elemental power of the ocean continues to influence much of his work.
Canning has exhibited in highly reputable private galleries, produced major public and corporate commissions and has been featured in numerous international art fairs since the early 1990′s. In 2006, Canning was invited to participate in Art Now Cornwall at Tate, St Ives. His inclusion in this exhibition confirmed his position as one of the new generation of St Ives School Artists following in the footsteps of Patrick Heron, Peter Lanyon and Ben Nicholson.
Canning lives and works in West Cornwall, England.
“Abstraction has allowed me to find my own voice as an artist… I wanted to express movement, light and more importantly, energy. Rather than taking a static viewpoint, it was my aim to try and capture the sensation of moving through landscape ‐ floating, feeling the power of wind and sea.”
