Nancy Lee
Lee’s photo collages feature a prominent grid that simultaneously structures the image space while fragmenting the depicted reality. This interplay of visual chaos and optical harmony creates an unexpected connection between the audience and the image.
Her compositions consist of tiny particles of reality that blend together in a photographic symphony of urban simultaneity. Each collage explores a specific subject, such as traffic, market life, or pedestrians, that are organised according to distinct characteristics. By cutting apart and reassembling reality, Lee creates a puzzle-like composition that invites the viewer to mentally reconstruct the individual elements.
The primary focus of Lee’s collages is the visual rhythm of each image, which creates a unique atmosphere or musically-inspired theme. Some of the collages resemble eclectic jazz improvisations, while others float harmoniously like classical music pieces. This abstract-aesthetic rearrangement of reality can be interpreted as a representation of the globalised world, in which the homogeneity of the whole is disrupted by the diversity of its individual parts, despite their similarity or even identity.

Nancy Lee lives and works in the Netherlands.
“My work is graphic, full of repeated patterns, strong colors and movements.
It is superstructural, like the routines in our daily life. Our comfort zone is a mini city. My photos are like a muticultural village. In my world, the boundaries are thin and the cultures are mixed. Our comfort zone is a city which is materialistic, toy like and thrives on high consumption. Globalisation is happening and is happening fast. we are running our risk to lose our unique original identity and individuals.”
