Kazuaki

Kazuaki takes photographs of the Tohoku region in northern areas of Japan’s main island, mostly the natural landscapes of Yamagata. Entering deep into the wilderness and observing, he encounters the winding paths nature has taken through the passage of time, and vestiges of the deep connections between nature and the people who lived here long before these modern times. He feel like this is nature in its purest form.

Over eight years, Koseki has documented the luminous fireflies of Japan, translating their twinkling flight paths into awe-inspiring photographs, and sounding the alarm about the danger to these creatures caused by human intervention and the climate crisis

I am drawn to moments that exist quietly,
before they ask to be noticed.
Light, time, and distance shape the image,
but absence gives it meaning.
What remains unseen is as important as what appears.
This is where the photograph begins.
